Swami Satyananda Giri

Swami Satyananda Giri was born on 17 November 1896 in Bikrampur (in present-day Bangladesh), to his parents Mohini Mohan Majumdar and Tarabasini Devi.

His spiritual master was Swami Shriyukteshwar, whose profound insight, vivid teaching of the scriptures, and immeasurable spiritual experience in Kriya Yoga shaped his growth as a devoted disciple.

His path was deeply influenced by his childhood friend Mukunda — the future Paramahamsa Yogananda. Together they spent time meditating in seclusion at various holy places and temples. Although Yogananda invited him to America, Satyananda declined the invitation and chose instead to serve India.

In 1919, on his teacher’s instruction, he was initiated into the monastic order and became Swami Satyananda Giri. He organized a residential school at Ranchi Ashram, and in 1944 founded the Sevayatan Satsang Mission in Jhargram, where he devoted himself selflessly to serving the poor during the Bengal famine.

He initiated disciples into the advanced kriyas and remained deeply devoted to spreading the practice throughout India. He left his body on 2 August 1971 at his Sevayatan Satsang Mission. Within the Kriya Yoga lineage he is regarded as a gifted disciple and a truly divine master.
